APPLICATION OF NMT TO IMPROVE SWIMMING PERFORMANCE
Team Physician President Pallanuoto
A study was conducted on the application of NeuroMuscular Taping on a group of professional athletes who play for Bologna’s PRESIDENT Water Polo Club. This team played in the 2008-09 season in Italy’s National A2 league and the study was carried out on 10 Nov 2008.
The tests were conducted in Bologna’s Sterlino swimming pool, where the team trains and plays. The athletes were subjected to swimming tests over 100 meters carried out first without the application of NeuroMuscular Taping. Then, after a 20-minute rest period, once again with NeuroMuscular Taping. Taping was applied to the lumber region: two 25-cm strips, applied to the each side of the spine, in anterior flexion of 45°.
All of the athletes showed improvement in their performance times. At the end of the test, the athletes reported feeling less tired and feeling subjectively “light” in their backs. This was due to the decompression effected by the tape in the lumbar area, leading to a lengthening of the elastic component of the muscle fibers and therefore of the arm stroke in free-style swimming.
Distance 100 meters, free-style swimming, without ball
At the end of the test, the athletes reported feeling less tired and feeling subjectively “light” in their backs, due to the decompression in the lumbar area brought about by the taping.
